The bitter and the sweet

I have a latte addiction. Over the last month or so I've had three or four chances to reflect on how I got here, on how this habit that is now second nature started, startled and transported without fail every time the memories came.

What you need to know is that I do not take sugar in my tea. I just don't. Black rates a lemon wedge, unless it's one of those fancy flavored black teas (like this one that I brewed a whole pot of the other day), and then it's straight. Herbal, green, white, roobois-- no sweetening any of them, thankyouverymuch. They are what they are, and if I don't like the smell, I don't buy the tea.

What else you might want to know is that I managed to get through both undergrad and good part of graduate school without developing a full blown coffee addiction. Oh, sure,  my first exam week, the one in the winter of my freshman year, was more or less entirely courtesy of chocolate covered coffee beans. But really, who could resist that-- deep dark chocolate goodness over the magic bullet of late night endurance? I had a baggie that I got as a gift less than two weeks prior. I budgeted my stash for optimal performance-- one bean every 30 minutes, or maybe 45, or even an hour, if the night was still young. I thought that was pretty clever-- a steady stream of low dose brain support, not much for peaks or valleys.

Anywaaaaaaay, fast forward seven or so years, and I am finding it a fun part of my morning routine to grab a cup of coffee on the way to lab or office. At the same time, I am finding it incredibly annoying that my period has been MIA for months, and that the hoity-toity doctor at the university clinic has sent me home with a prescription of progesterone and not a word of explanation. So just about when I am starting to think that this coffee thing is a great counterpoint to the windy and bone-chilling walk from where I park to where I work, I get to see the world's best nurse practioner, who, in three seconds flat, delivers the diagnosis of PCOS. I search the internets and learn of the low carb way of life that sometimes help. I read low carb books and websites, and I learn that coffee has to go, at least to start. So it goes.

It took us another year and a half to get pregnant with Monkey. Then it was the pregnancy, and me hyper-paranoid, and nauseous anyway. By the time I had given birth to Monkey I wasn't even missing coffee. Sushi-- now that was something I was keenly interested in getting back to. But coffee? Meh. Whatever.

I picked it up again when I went back to work, but only on as needed basis. And that's really how it remained up until A died-- not usually, but sometimes. I did like to order a cappuccino for desert at restaurants, but again, once in a while.

If you want a coffee lover, though, then my husband is your man. We own two traditional stove top pots for making Turkish coffee. We also own a drip coffee maker that grinds its own beans. JD was entrepreneurial in exploring locally available bean options, but for many years we also belonged to a mail service that sent us coffee once a month, service JD finally and gleefully cancelled last year as the alternative service, one that now sends us coffee pods came online. Sends us what, you ask? Pods. Coffee in the pods, for a one cup at a time machine. We saw the machine on one of the first Apprentice seasons, and the man fell in love. When friends asked what he would like for his birthday that year, I told them to pull their money and make his day. They did, and it did. We made room for it in the kitchen, but still for a long time it was his toy. Don't get me wrong-- I was happy we had it, since running a drip for one cup was a bit silly, and the stove top thing takes time.

 

So how did we get from his toy to my latte addiction? More or less in one jump. A died. I went to work three weeks later, as soon as I was physically able. Not the brightest of my ideas, I confess, but at the time it seemed like the thing to do. I wasn't exactly happy at work, as you can guess. I wasn't even exactly focused. The project I was doing at the time dragged, and as result, because the boss became swamped after I left, and even though I did leave her a finished document, is still unpublished. Bleh.

Ok, let's call things what they were. Unfocused is way too mild. I didn't want to be there, or anywhere, really. I had great colleagues, but I'd have rather sat on the couch and read blogs. I'd have rather slept. I'd have rather excavated my office, even. That was the project on my to-do list for the last couple of weeks of pregnancy or for when I was on maternity leave. See how well that worked out? (I did tackle the thing, a bit, last year, but it is again in need of major help. Maybe next weekend then...)

So not wanting to be at work, feeling more than a bit guilty for not getting the work done, and more than a bit pissed off that I was there instead of home with an infant, I realized that I needed something in the day to look forward to. Something that was just for me. Something that wouldn't tax me, something that was a reward for making it to work on my worst days, and a way to settle myself and get something done on my best. After a few days of little sleep and necessary caffeine, one of them splurging on a latte instead of my usual black with a lot of room of cream, that's what it became-- my ME moment, my daily latte. 

My lattes are so sweet that JD and a couple of otherwise perfectly lovely bloggers make fun of me. You put how much splenda in there? You let them put how many pumps of that syrup (sugar-free, usually hazelnut, if you care) into your order? A lot, and many (though not together-- one or the other). My latte is to be sweet, plenty sweet to cover the bitter. When it comes to coffee, I am not a connoisseur. I am an escape artist.

 

That year, when asked what I wanted for my birthday, my first instinct was to say "um, nothing-- what I want I can't have." A flash of inspiration later I started answering "Starbucks cards. No, not kidding." Eventually, we bought a frother thingie and, with an able assist of the pod machine, learned to make lattes at home. Six-seven months ago our pod machine broke. Sputtered water all over the place for a while, and then just gave up the ghost. JD tried to survive for a week or so, gave up, and bought a replacement. A few days later I called customer service, hopeful that maybe they knew of this ailment, maybe there was a part I could buy.

Turns out these suckers have something very close to lifetime warranty. We never registered ours when we bought it, but that didn't seem to matter. They sent us a box, postage pre-paid. We sent them the broken machine. They sent us back a new one with a note on how the old one was well and truly caput. My profit on the deal was that the new one JD bought went to work with me. For a full effect, I need to find a small microwave, to steam the milk in. I already have a spare frother. For now I am drinking coffee with lots of cream and splenda when at work, and proper lattes when at home.

When I drink either, I don't usually think about how this started. But I am not sorry that things this last month conspired to make me think about it-- somehow in this season that has been somewhat unexpectedly hard, I find it comforting to locate this link I have to my boy. In my mind, it's not a present from him, nor a consolation prize. And it goes without saying that I would rather have him than all the lattes in the world. But since this is where I am, I will have that latte with all the splenda I need. So there.

You know, I started smoking for this reason. If I couldn't have Gabe, I might as well have duMaurier. . . .

I missed coffee the most during both pregnancies. I did ok without the occasional glass of wine, and diverted to cooked shrimp at the sushi place, but coffee? It killed me. If I don't have at least one cup of fulll-on caf, cream no sugar, by noon, you can write the day off. I was good about not drinking it while breast feeding as well, so the week Maddy was alive I stayed away. And then we decided to take her off life support and the first thing I did after that meeting? Was go find a cup of coffee. And I subsisted on coffee alone for weeks after her death. And I joke, but I don't think too joke-ingly, that at least I'm not an alcoholic or drug addict after what happened -- just a coffee nut. Coffee is my comfort, too.

I think coffee changed from "wow, that would be nice when I got up" to "Wow, that's pretty much the only thing I can deal with when I get out of bed. Might as well." Sometimes I feel it's the springboard that gets me through my day.

I have a bath with a book to read. Nearly every single night. And most nights, it's with a glass of wine or cocktail perched on the edge. I always took baths before we lost W, and drank some. But it's become something of a routine now. Good? No, I suppose not. But, I am not smoking. Isn't that something?

I'm still searching for a ritual, something that makes the burdens more bearable. I watch too much TV, and eat too much ice cream, and then feel guilty about both. I'm more afraid to have a drink than I used to be - two alcoholic grandfathers is making me wary of depending too much on dulling the edges now that I really crave that kind of dullness. I may go back to yoga, but I started just before I knew I was pregnant, so yoga will always and forever be a little bit about Teddy, and I'm not sure how I'll handle that yet. This weekend, I had my first pedicure and may go back for more - the focus on my physical self, on taking care of that self, felt good.

Thanks so much for this post, Julia. I started work about 6 weeks after Teddy died, and I haven't been as good at or as interested in my job these past few months - some days I feel horribly guilty about that, and hearing that you had similar experiences makes me think that perhaps I shouldn't be so hard on myself, that maybe this is just the way things are for a while.

Blasting music into my eardrums as loud as I can.

I know it's bad for me. I was a trained musician in my first incarnation before I realized I just liked music and not the crap that went with it.

If I had a harp at home I don't think I'd do it. What I'm after is that feeling you get when the music gets into your bones. You get that automatically with a harp or a drum, the vibration goes into you somehow. I have my bodhran but that's not conducive to playing at two in the morning or when I'm needing my fix. So, on with headphones and the volume cranked up. Synthesesia, rescue me.

I don't do it when my son's awake. Mama doesn't need to set a bad example, especially after lecturing him about wearing his "ears" when he rides the lawnmower with his Gaffer, and how "construction guys" wear "ears" when they work with noisy things. But I do it anyway.

Before Hope - coffee - one strong latte, no sugar, daily. Pregnant, reluctantly a decaf. Took me months to get used to the stuff, but when I did it was fine and I even looked forward to it each day. Post losing Hope, well I'm still acting as if I am pregnant, even today, four months on. Still only drink decaf, still have not had one sip of alcohol. Partly because i defiantly think "well I wouldn't be drinking now anyway, I'd be breastfeeding" and also because we are trying again for our second baby, so I am just trying to stay in the best shape possible. Soft cheeses and sushi however? Well I must admit I was keen to tuck back in to those two of my favourites again.
Baths have been another favourite for me in the last few months, but with our chronic water shortages here in my part of the world, that's one addiction I really have to try and curb. I am trying to re-use my bath water though for my garden, as gardening has become my new hobby now that I don't have a baby to care for.....

Work (well, and maybe blogging) became my addictions. In the year after I lost the twins, I got something like three (small, but useful) bonuses and monetary awards because I became so freaking productive....

Lattes for me, too. Sometimes more than one a day. And wine. And ice cream. And going to bed early with a book.

The lattes are the only daily indulgence (although the ice cream is near-daily . . .), but the others are necessities on a regular basis. Re: the reading in bed, sometimes I go to bed as early as 7:45 and just read for hours and hours, often while drinking wine and/or eating snackies. In my bed. Sleep experts would say that the drinking/eating in bed are truly awful habits, but I sleep quite well, so I'm not worried.

Oh, one other thing that I pretty much MUST do daily is take a hot, hot shower, and a pretty long one at that. Sometimes that's the only time I get for myself all day, and I treasure it.

For me it is definitely coffee. That first week after Oliver died we drank a lot of coffee. Before that I had cut back to one or two decaf lattes a week but in a very short time I was making two pots of coffee a day - and that was when my husband was back at work. Now I usually have one or two cups in the morning.

It was very nearly the bottle of Crown Royal that a client gave to my husband which sits unopened above the fridge. We both contemplated cracking the seal but were scared of where that might take us...

That all just depends on how low things are.
Usually a hot (hot, hot) bath, good book, candles, and a cold coke or water. I put EO or herbs in the tub.
When things are really low. I turn off all the lights and get in a hot shower. I sit int he bottom and cry.

Ben and Jerry's Mint Cookie has become a staple. Something I never had before I.
In the early months after we lost her, I would watch movies. I don't do this very often anymore.

My vice is caffeine. Coke to be exact. I never acquired a taste for coffee, but once I gave up trying to breastfeed, I desparately needed the caffeine to combat the sleep deprivation. After Noah died, the habit just got worse.

Someday's while Monkey is napping, I curl up on the couch and watch a few TV shows that I have DVR'd. It is time just for me to relax by myself.

I keep shying away from the alcohol, too. I used to like having a glass of wine with dinner, a beer now and then. But sometimes it is like I'm still waiting to have Aeryn, I can't drink the coffee or have the wine. I bought a couple of bottles last grocery trip, decent red and white, but I haven't popped them open. I even tell myself I will, then I just don't. Weird how our brains fixate on some things.

Oh, I cycle through them. When the Eldest was neatly dividing his time between the hospital and home, a nice nurse introduced me to the tub room, and offered to watch the kid while I tubbed. And for two years, various packets of bath stuff graced my (pre-packed, natch) hospital bag.

Then there was chocolate. And coffee, with oooh that foamy whipped hot milk (okay, so fat free, but who cares? froth and foam and ahhh), and a shake of nutmeg on top. Or chai with the foam. But foamy goodness, nonetheless, with a book to read and snuggled in bed.

Now, I'm surprised to see how I've minimalized it. I drop into bed at 1 or so in the morning, desperate for sleep. So, no heating and frothing and brewing time. And no diary mug sitting on the dresser, in case Allergy Kid comes trolling in the night.

Even if I'm being ruthless about my froth, I seem to need to wind down with a hot drink and a small treat - these days, it's often tea and a bit of fruit or berry.. But the chocolate's waiting in my dresser (shhh) and I know I can always upgrade.

For me, the point is the snuggle into the bed, the quiet, the me-routine. Specifics can vary, so long as there is that parting ritual to the day.

since chris is a coffee roaster, I started to drink his freshly roasted coffee every morning since silas died. I didn't really drink it before then, I was always into tea- chai mostly which I still love. I guess though I needed something stronger to get me through my day. I love the buzz. I have gone back to the wine and beer and definitely the chocolate. luckily I also do yoga almost every day. I try to get the yoga in before I indulge in my glass of wine or a beer or 2. I figure I'd better get it all in before I get pregnant again. but the coffee has been the one new addition that definitely gets me through my day. nothing like a cup of freshly roasted beans - and I'm only adding a soy creamer to it, no sugar. not sure why but that's how I'm enjoying it most. lately though- some baileys in it hits the spot.

I've always enjoyed a sugary coffee drink, topped with whipped cream, of course. Since losing my twins over three years ago, it has become a necessary habit. I think it started when my sister-in-law accompanied me to the local chain coffee store a few times shortly after losing my boys, and we actually talked about what happened. You know how rare and precious that is, right? My husband and I went to see a couple of movies during that time, and that was an amazing (but temporary) escape. One of the movies was Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I even laughed a few times. Almost daily, I sit with a blanket, some chocolate, and some tea or a cafe mocha.

I think it's interesting how several people have commented on being afraid to drink alcohol. I had the same thought about the percocet (pain medication) that I received in the hospital after my emergency cesarean. It did a great job of taking the edge off, but I was afraid to rely on it, so I only took a few.

Anyway, I find this an amazing phenomenon...that so many people seem to have a reward, a treat, an escape.

Coke. As in Coca-cola. I love it, and give it up with pregnancy. After M died, it took me months to get back to it because I wasn't ready to admit that I was neither pregnant nor breastfeeding the way I should be. But once I did go back, I swear it was like liquer for me. I literally would take a sip and feel tension draining from my body. I'm picky too, I like it ice cold, lots of ice, and fresh, no flat soda for me.

The other one would probably be TV. After M died, TV got me through many a lonely, sad night. Now I am trying to give it up, and watch it occasionally, the way I used to. But it is hard because I still feel a an almost sick loyalty to it, it was my friend for awhile.
